If you are looking to reduce IT spending or minimize distractions from managing your own IT services, then cloud computing may be an option worth investigating.
What is cloud computing?
The definition of cloud computing is the use of computing resources (hardware and software) that are delivered as a service over a network. It’s easy to understand if you compare it to electricity. You use electricity to run your offices, but you don’t own or manage the power plant and electrical lines. Cloud computing works the same way where companies that specialize in IT provide you with the computing power to run your business over a network, and you don’t have to maintain all of the hardware and software used to run the servers.
Remove distractions, potentially save money
It would be expensive and inefficient for every business to supply their own electricity, yet many companies are taking this approach with IT. For example, if you manage email internally, you probably bought servers, software, and network equipment and spent time building the system, maintaining it and troubleshooting. For 25 users, internally-managed Microsoft Exchange email will cost around $21,000 in the first year, including labor, with a 5-year total cost of approximately $36,000.
In the cloud, you can find Microsoft Exchange managed by experts with the same level of service, and often better, for $15 per user per month. In the example above, that’s a cost of $4,500 per year, or a 5-year total cost of $22,500. That's a savings of around $14,000, while also eliminating the distraction of managing your own email.

- Get applications up and running faster
- Avoid maintenance hassles
- Roll out new updates quickly
- Scale IT up or down to match business needs
- Free your people to focus on core business needs
