Rumco Construction Speeds Up Field Entry, Reduces Paperwork and Distributes Information with HeavyJob

June 18, 2014

Generating daily cost reports from handwritten notes and text messages was no longer viable for Rumco Construction. “Between our superintendents, our project engineers and our accounting system, we were getting to where we had three different sets of books,” said Carlos Gonzalez, VP of Rumco Construction, and numbers weren’t matching up.

Looking for a way to eliminate the duplication of data and turn people into users of data rather than creators of data, Rumco implemented HCSS’s job management software HeavyJob. Starting with a few pilot jobs, a small group worked through the system to fully understand it before introducing it to all jobs across the board. “We now have about 25-30 active jobs at once using HeavyJob,” said Gonzalez.  “We have one guy using the Field version on a laptop but pretty much everyone else is using HeavyJob Mobile on iPads.”

A Fast Way to Allocate Overtime on Time Cards

May 21, 2014

Since learning about HeavyJob’s Overtime Tool last year at HCSS’s Users Group Meeting, Daniel Duke with ARB Inc. has saved a significant amount of time in making his company more efficient. His division of ARB is the only one who uses HeavyJob and it “makes us look like geniuses” said Duke.

Previously each job had a dedicated timekeeper to ensure all time cards were filled out and entered correctly. Once Duke learned about the Overtime Tool, he returned to his office and explained that he was able to reallocate the timekeepers tasks. This tool within HeavyJob would save them that much time.

Metal Detector App Saves Construction Crew Hours of Search Time

May 13, 2014

Zoladz Construction Company was recently on the HCSS Campus for HeavyJob implementation when they told a story that was too good not to share. They received a call from a facility manager, asking them to investigate a potential sewer problem. Being that Zoladz had completed the sitework for this owner a year earlier, they felt obligated to assist.

Fast Implementation of Construction Time Entry and Job Costing Software

April 30, 2014

Alutiiq, headquartered in Anchorage, AK, was 5 weeks into the company’s first big civil job. They needed to jump in head first using job management software in order to track labor, equipment and materials, and get control of costs in a quick and accurate way.  The goal was to train on HeavyJob Field entry and reporting software one week and have their foremen go live the following week. With total dedication from all team members, goal setting across the board and planning at the HCSS campus, they pulled off an unprecedented two-week implementation and the results were outstanding.

Wally Forbes, Concrete Superintendent at Alutiiq, says he is not one to rush new technology and had to rely on the confidence from others on how valuable this tool would be. “I held a certain amount of disbelief on how HeavyJob could make my life any better,” said Forbes.

How World-Class Construction Operations Improve Foremen Productivity: An Article by Ethan Cowles

April 30, 2014

What is the difference between a successful contractor and a second-rate one? A great foreman says Ethan Cowles. Cowles has worked hands-on in the heavy construction industry from carpenter to Project Management and knows first-hand what it takes to be successful.

Cowles, currently a senior consultant with FMI, a company founded in 1953 that provides management consulting and investment banking for the engineering and construction industry, works with clients to maximize their productivity and find solutions.

How American Infrastructure Chose Their Construction Time Entry System

April 30, 2014

When American Infrastructure began looking for a mobile timecard and job management solution for 150 foremen, they took a novel approach by putting it into the hands of those who would be using it. They gave a group of foremen four different options to see which one would be the easiest to use with little instruction. Unlike other mobile timecard systems, HeavyJob Mobile looked like their previous timecards and “was the obvious choice,” said Eugene Eshbach, Manager of Construction Information and Process. With its grid format, quantities up top, employee names down the side and the ability to put codes in, HeavyJob Mobile was intuitive and didn’t require a lot of training.

The process prior to implementing HeavyJob included faxing and emailing timecards, which a group of clerks then manually entered in overnight for the sole purpose of generating a cost report for the next day. Adopting a more streamlined system was essential.

The Magnet Board Integrates with HeavyJob

March 8, 2013

When it comes to using numerous construction software products, you quickly discover how important it is for the software packages to integrate with each other.

Do you ever have those situations where, despite your best efforts, equipment and employees are working on a job and dispatch doesn't know about it?

To help correct these scheduling conflicts, HCSS has added a new "True-up from HeavyJob" feature into our resource management software, The Dispatcher, allowing you to sync your resource allocations. Here's how it works:
